How do you design a covered patio so it feels like a room?

Through continuity, not duplication. Carry the interior palette, tones and materials outside in a slightly more relaxed form, so both spaces feel like parts of one home.
Palette: Take outdoor colours from the interior scheme. Warm stone, oatmeal, olive and weathered timber tones sit well against vineyards and mountains.
Flooring: A floor that continues from inside to outside, or closely echoes the interior floor, makes the threshold disappear when the doors are open.
Sightlines: Place the main seating group where it can be seen from the lounge or kitchen, so the eye is drawn outward.
Materials: Echo, rather than copy. An oak table inside can be matched by teak outside, and a linen sofa by a woven outdoor sofa in the same tone.
How big should a covered patio be for an outdoor living room?
Size it for the zones you want, not the other way round. As a guide, a comfortable lounge group needs roughly 4m by 4m, and an outdoor dining table for eight needs around 4m by 3m including room to pull out chairs.
For a lounge plus dining area plus braai, most families need a covered space that is deep as well as long. A narrow stoep that is only 2m to 2.5m deep will fit a row of chairs, but not a proper conversation group. Allow about 90cm of walkway behind dining chairs and between furniture groups, so people can move without squeezing past each other. What outdoor furniture and fabrics last longest in the Cape Winelands?

How do you lay out an outdoor living room for entertaining?
Create separate zones for lounging, dining and braaiing, and position them around how you entertain. Face the lounge seating inward and toward the view, keep the dining area near the kitchen door, and place the braai so smoke drifts away from guests.
Lounge: A sofa with two or three deep armchairs, arranged as a conversation group rather than lined against a wall.
Dining: A table sized for how often and how many you host, close to the kitchen for easy serving.
Braai or outdoor kitchen: Near the dining area so the host stays part of the conversation, but downwind of the seating.

Accent: Uplighting on trees, wall washers on stone or textured walls, and lanterns or rechargeable lamps on low tables.
Use a warm colour temperature so skin tones and timber look their best. Plan electrical points during building or renovation, since adding them to a finished ceiling is disruptive and costly.
How do you make a covered patio usable in winter?
Close off the windward side, add a heat source and bring in warm textiles. With outdoor blinds or glass on the exposed side, a fireplace or heater, and throws on the seating, a covered patio in the Winelands can stay usable for much of the year.

Can outdoor cushions get wet?
Good-quality outdoor cushions with solution-dyed covers and quick-dry foam can get wet and will dry out. Cheaper cushions hold water and develop mildew. Even with good cushions, storing them during long rainy periods helps them last longer.
Can outdoor rugs be left out all year?
Outdoor rugs made from polypropylene or similar synthetic fibres can handle sun and rain under cover. Lift and dry them after heavy rain and clean them regularly, so moisture doesn't stay trapped against the floor.
Can you braai on a covered patio?
Yes, provided there is good ventilation, enough height above the braai, and a proper extractor or chimney for a built-in braai. Check the manufacturer's guidelines and your estate's building rules before installing one.
Can you use indoor furniture outdoors?
Indoor furniture is not designed for sun, moisture or temperature changes. It may be fine briefly in a fully enclosed, protected space, but on an open patio it will usually fade, warp or mildew. Outdoor-rated furniture is the better investment.
